Description

Following the success of the 300 SL Coupe and Roadster, Mercedes-Benz's United States importer, Max Hoffman, suggested that a similarly styled, less costly alternative might be successful. The resulting 190 SL proved popular with the public at the 1954 New York Auto Show, and it remained in strong demand throughout its nine-year production run. The 190 SL was well-suited for touring, as it featured copious amounts of luggage space despite having a convertible top. The model continues to impress discerning collectors. In 1961, this car was sold new in the U.S. Although it began its life in standard specification, it was rebuilt to a concourse condition 190 SLR, from 2020 till 2022. SLR is an abbreviation for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" (Sport Light Racing), a homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR which served as the car's inspiration. This recreation features a variety of components consistent with the in-period race-specification, such as the hood with scoop, cut-down doors, the removal of the hefty bumpers, and a cut-down windscreen. The seats are 300 SL bucket seats covered with blue leather and chequered cloth upholstery and the exterior is finished in an very attractive Jaguar Silver paint. The dashboard is devoid of any ventilation controls or radio. Instead, the driver is treated to a set of clear, functional gauges and a retro trip rally computer. Under the skin is where the real magic happens. The engine compartment was entirely restored to concourse condition with period-correct finish and functions.

  • The 190SLR is fitted with a 2.7 L block coming from a W115.
  • The original 190SL cylinder heads were ported for better flow. A customized AA-performance piston set is used to clear the valves.
  • Jenvey Heritage T.B. injection system with Weber looks in place of the old Solexes. Complete  exhaust in stainless steel.
  • Custom made alloy radiator and new water pump were installed for better cooling.
  • The original fuel reservoir was changed for a racing fuel cell.
  • The original generator was replaced with a heavy duty GM alternator.
For easy handling the 190SLR has an EZ power steering. The car has been fitted with 15” knock-off Rudge wheels, including a spare wheel, lightweight aluminum engine bonnet, trunk and doors. The recreation to concours condition of this 190 SLR, was performed by Mistral Classics in Ieper, Belgium. The summation of all those various changes results in an amazing authentic competitive driving experience, with spectacular acceleration and great stability
